NASA's CASALS instrument is a new development designed to eliminate blind spots in Earth's surface lidar data. This instrument blends machine learning with an ultra-compact lidar system to adaptively scan large areas, enabling the creation of detailed three-dimensional topographical renderings.
Key points
- NASA's CASALS instrument uses AI and lidar to map Earth's surface.
- It eliminates data gaps left by traditional laser instruments.
- CASALS creates detailed three-dimensional topographical renderings.
- The instrument uses wavelength manipulation instead of mechanical mirrors.
Traditional space-based laser instruments measure Earth's terrain with narrow lines, leaving significant gaps in data. CASALS addresses this by using wavelength manipulation to steer light, generating a continuous 3D swath of the ground below, rather than relying on mechanically steered lasers.
Researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center developed CASALS with support from NASA's Earth Science Technology Office. The system features a novel transmitter and optical grating system that manipulates laser pulses without heavy, motorized mirrors. It utilizes a fast-pulsing, tunable "seed" laser at 1040 nanometers, cycling through 256 wavelengths via a transmission grating.
A video from a CASALS flight over Delaware's Great Cypress Swamp on November 12, 2024, demonstrated its capabilities, showing tree canopy tops in green, the ground in purple, and near-ground vegetation in blue. This technology aims to map Earth's surface features with unprecedented detail.
