More H5 Avian Flu Cases Detected in Wild Birds in Australia

The highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus has been detected in a fourth wild bird in Australia, with a fifth suspected case under investigation. The latest confirmed case was identified in a black swan found deceased in Victoria state on May 15, 2024. This follows previous detections in wild birds in New South Wales and Tasmania earlier in May. The Australian government's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry confirmed the finding, emphasizing that the risk to the general public remains low. However, the virus poses a significant threat to poultry industries, and biosecurity measures are being enhanced across the country. Officials are working to trace the origin of the outbreak and monitor its spread, particularly among migratory bird populations. The department has advised poultry owners to maintain strict biosecurity practices to prevent potential transmission to domestic flocks. This marks the first detection of H5N1 in wild birds in Australia since 2021, raising concerns about potential incursions into commercial poultry farms.
