More fathers are becoming the primary caregiver

Fathers are increasingly taking on primary caregiving roles, with the average time spent on childcare per week rising significantly. In 1965, fathers spent approximately two and a half hours weekly with their children, a figure that grew to an average of nine hours by 2024. This shift is also reflected in employment statistics, as the percentage of fathers not working due to being the primary parent or managing the household increased from 4% in 1989 to 23% in 2021. Among fathers employed full-time, 11% identify as primary caregivers, compared to 37% of mothers. These fathers adopt various caregiving arrangements, including working non-traditional hours, balancing freelance work with childcare, or managing household duties alongside remote employment. Some fathers transition into these roles due to job layoffs, the flexibility of freelance work, or the specific needs of their families, though many do not self-identify as stay-at-home dads.
