Microsoft released updates to fix more than 1,400 security vulnerabilities in its Windows operating systems and other software. This number significantly surpasses the previous record of nearly 1,000 fixes from September.
Key points
- Microsoft patched over 1,400 security vulnerabilities in its software.
- One zero-day vulnerability in Windows Shell was exploited in the wild.
- 78 of the fixed flaws are rated as critical.
- Microsoft extended Windows 10 support until October 2027.
- AI is credited with discovering many of the vulnerabilities.
Among the vulnerabilities addressed is a "zero day" flaw, CVE-2026-96951, a security feature bypass in the Windows Shell affecting Windows 10, 11, and some Server versions, which has already been exploited in the wild.
The company also extended free security updates for Windows 10 users until October 2027, a year longer than initially planned.
By the numbers
- security vulnerabilities patched
- 1,400
- critical flaws fixed
- 78
At least 78 of the patched flaws are classified as "critical," potentially allowing attackers to execute code on vulnerable systems with minimal user interaction. Another disclosed vulnerability in the .NET Framework, CVE-2026-108398, was publicly known before the patch.
Satnam Narang of Tenable noted that Microsoft has now surpassed 4,000 CVEs patched this year with two months remaining, exceeding the total from the previous record year of 2020.
“We’ve now crossed the 4,000 CVE mark with two months left to go.”
Microsoft attributes the high volume of bug discoveries to large language models, suggesting AI plays a role in both finding and fixing these flaws. However, security experts warn that these large patch releases strain corporate security teams.
