Mexican EV Startup Unveils $8,600 State-Backed EV With 6 Seats
Mexican electric vehicle startup Olinia unveiled the Olinia Uno, a six-seater EV designed to accommodate a wheelchair, on May 21, 2024. The vehicle, priced at $8,600, is entirely made, designed, and developed in Mexico, with significant backing from the Mexican government. This initiative aims to democratize EV ownership in the country by offering an affordable and accessible option. The Olinia Uno boasts a range of 250 miles (400 kilometers) on a single charge and features a modular design that allows for customization. Production is slated to begin in the second half of 2024, with an initial target of 1,000 units. The company has secured $5 million in seed funding and is in talks with potential investors for a Series A round to scale production. Olinia's CEO, Maria Rodriguez, stated that the company's mission is to provide sustainable transportation solutions for the broader population, not just the premium market. The Olinia Uno is expected to compete with established global EV manufacturers by offering a unique combination of affordability, capacity, and accessibility.
