Meta Offers Free Facebook Verification Via Video Selfie

Meta Platforms launched Facebook Verified on Friday, a new feature that offers a free verification badge for Facebook users who complete a video selfie process. This initiative aims to confirm the authenticity of real people behind profiles by using facial recognition technology to match the video selfie against existing profile photos. Once verified, the badge will be visible across Facebook Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and user profiles, with plans to extend its display to feed posts in the future. The verification process requires a one-time completion and does not involve any subscription fees, differentiating it from the paid Meta Verified subscription service which ranges from $14.99 to $499.99 per month.

The introduction of Facebook Verified comes as Meta observes an increase in AI-generated content across its platforms. The company stated in a news release that as AI makes it easier to create content, a clear signal distinguishing real individuals becomes increasingly crucial. This move aligns with a broader trend in the tech industry towards enhanced biometric security measures. For instance, Google launched a similar selfie video sign-in system the day prior, allowing users to access their accounts via live video selfies. Facial biometric authentication is already a familiar technology for many, notably used by Apple in its Face ID feature for iPhones and other devices.

The Facebook Verified badges will have a distinct appearance compared to the paid blue checkmarks. The rollout will occur in phases, beginning in select markets, with a subsequent global expansion planned. This strategy suggests Meta's commitment to leveraging biometric data for identity verification, potentially setting a precedent for other tech companies to adopt similar default security features.
