Meta Blocks NSO Group's New WhatsApp Phishing Attack, Files Contempt Order
Meta announced on Monday that it has detected and blocked spear-phishing attempts associated with the Israeli spyware company NSO Group. The technology giant is also initiating a federal court contempt order against NSO Group for breaching a permanent injunction that prohibited the company from targeting WhatsApp and its user base. These phishing attempts aimed to deceive individuals into clicking on malicious links, which would then redirect them to external websites. Meta's legal action follows a previous lawsuit filed in October 2019, where Meta accused NSO Group of using WhatsApp to conduct state-sponsored surveillance. The company stated that NSO Group's actions represent a pattern of abuse against journalists, activists, and other targets. Meta's security teams identified the new attack campaign earlier this year and took immediate steps to block the malicious activity and notify affected users. The company emphasized its commitment to protecting user privacy and security across its platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.
