Iranians Defy Heatwave for Khamenei Funeral

Millions of Iranians continued to participate in funeral processions for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the second day of national mourning. The extensive public gatherings took place despite a severe heatwave gripping the country, with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in many regions. State media reported that the ceremonies were among the largest in the country's history, drawing vast crowds to the capital, Tehran, and other major cities.

The funeral events began on Monday, May 20, 2024, with the main procession scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The scale of the public turnout underscores the significant role Khamenei held in Iranian society for over three decades. His death on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the age of 85, marked the end of an era for the Islamic Republic. The government has declared a period of mourning, and official activities have been suspended.

Following the public ceremonies, Khamenei's remains are expected to be interred in a mausoleum in the city of Qom, a significant religious center in Iran. The succession process for the next Supreme Leader is now a primary focus for the country's political establishment. The Assembly of Experts, a body of clerics, is responsible for electing the new leader. Khamenei had led Iran since 1989, succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
