LUAR Presents SS27 Collection "Christopher Street Columbus"

LUAR presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection, titled “Christopher Street Columbus,” on September 14, with a runway show held at the iconic Unisphere outside the Queens Museum. The collection draws inspiration from designer Raul Lopez’s Caribbean heritage and his formative experiences in the queer nightlife scene of Christopher Street. This latest offering continues LUAR’s signature subversive aesthetic, now presented with enhanced refinement. The outdoor runway was set up to encircle the Unisphere, illuminated under the evening sky as the show commenced at sunset. The choice of this landmark location amplified the collection's grandeur, which featured a diverse range of styles including experimental tailoring, clubwear, and elegant gowns. Early looks in the show were characterized by a more pared-back approach, yet Lopez introduced novel interpretations of familiar clothing staples. For instance, a double-breasted gray suit was paired with voluminous Spanish breeches, evoking imagery of Spanish voyagers. Another ensemble, a minimalist black suit with a standing collar, incorporated striking white lace cuffs that extended from the sleeves. The Spanish breeches reappeared throughout the collection in various lengths and materials, integrated with urban wear elements such as an array of black leather motorcycle jackets and crocodile-embossed pieces, including trucker jackets and jeans. LUAR's signature handbags were also featured, reflecting the fabric treatments of the garments with textures like reptile prints, faded leathers, and a vibrant blue velvet. A significant debut alongside the SS27 range was the highly limited LUAR x Lunazul clothing collection. This collaboration represents a fusion of LUAR’s New York City nightlife-inspired design ethos with Lunazul's expertise in tequila production. United by a shared commitment to craftsmanship, the collaborative collection includes a two-piece denim set and a classic baseball cap. The pieces are distinguished by the use of plant-based agave leather in a distinctive Lunazul blue, symbolizing their shared lunar muse against the night sky. Lopez stated his intention to transform an iconic plant like agave into vegan leather, highlighting the collection's innovative material choices and thematic depth. The collection's narrative weaves together historical references with contemporary fashion, reflecting Lopez's personal journey and cultural influences. The presentation underscored LUAR's position as a brand that consistently pushes creative boundaries while remaining grounded in meaningful storytelling and meticulous craftsmanship.
