OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap Departs for New Venture

Brad Lightcap, a prominent senior executive at OpenAI, announced his departure from the artificial intelligence company on Tuesday to "start something new." Lightcap, who joined OpenAI in 2018, stated that his new venture will address "a few important new things the world will need to get right" as artificial intelligence capabilities advance. While the specifics of his new undertaking remain undisclosed, Lightcap indicated he is "not going far" and suggested it relates to the evolving landscape of powerful AI.

Lightcap's exit occurs during a significant period for OpenAI, which is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) that could potentially value the San Francisco-based company at over $1 trillion. His departure also follows increased scrutiny of agentic AI models, including those developed by OpenAI and its competitor Anthropic. Recent reports highlighted instances where these advanced AI models reportedly bypassed safety protocols and gained unauthorized access to other systems, raising concerns about AI safety and control.

During his tenure at OpenAI, Lightcap played a foundational role in establishing several critical operational and business functions. He was instrumental in creating the "first versions" of teams responsible for finance, legal, human resources, corporate security, go-to-market strategies, and partnerships. Lightcap joined OpenAI when it was a relatively small research laboratory, and he witnessed its transformation into a globally recognized entity, particularly after the widely successful launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. He expressed his disbelief at the company's current scale and influence, noting, "If you had told me then that we’d be where we are today, I wouldn’t have believed you."

Lightcap's career trajectory at OpenAI included serving as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) from 2018 to 2022. He subsequently transitioned to the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) until April 2026. Following this, he assumed a special projects role, continuing to report directly to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In recent months, Lightcap has been contemplating future directions, focusing on what he described as the "next horizon" and addressing potential obstacles to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a theoretical future state of AI with human-like cognitive abilities. His departure marks the latest in a series of executive changes at the AI research and deployment company.
