Liz Meriwether Adapts Britney Spears Memoir For Universal

Liz Meriwether, a four-time Emmy nominee, has been tapped to write the screenplay for a film adaptation of Britney Spears' memoir, "The Woman in Me." The project is being produced by Marc Platt, known for "Wicked," and will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also helmed "Wicked."

Universal Pictures acquired the rights to Spears' memoir in August 2024. Platt and Chu were instrumental in securing these rights for the studio. Chu was initially attached to pen the screenplay himself before Meriwether took over the writing duties. The memoir, released in October 2023, details Spears' life, career, and her conservatorship battle.

Meriwether's previous writing credits include the television series "New Girl" and "Single Parents." Her involvement signals a significant step forward for the film adaptation, which aims to bring Spears' personal narrative to the screen. The collaboration between Meriwether, Platt, and Chu suggests a focus on a compelling and character-driven story, leveraging their respective experiences in comedy, drama, and musical filmmaking.
