LinkedIn Leads in AI-Generated Content, Study Finds

LinkedIn has emerged as the platform most saturated with AI-generated content, according to a new study by AI detection platform Pangram. The study analyzed nearly one million posts scrolled through by users of Pangram's Chrome extension over two months, utilizing an AI detection model with a reported 0.01% false positive rate. The findings indicate that AI-generated content is prevalent not only on spam sites but also on frequently visited social media platforms.

On the platform X, a quarter of long-form content was fully written by AI, with an additional 23% being AI-assisted. Substack showed the lowest rate of AI-written content among long-form platforms, yet more than one-fifth of its posts were flagged as AI-generated or AI-assisted. However, LinkedIn exhibited the highest prevalence of AI-generated long-form content. Pangram's data revealed that over 40% of LinkedIn posts exceeding 250 words were identified as fully AI-written.

Further analysis by Pangram indicated that top-level posts on LinkedIn were 1.35 times more likely to be AI-generated than comments. Even LinkedIn comments showed a slightly higher likelihood of AI generation compared to top-level posts on other platforms. The study also noted that LinkedIn's integrated "Enhance post" button simplifies the use of AI writing assistance for users.

In response to inquiries, LinkedIn referenced a May post by global editorial executive editor Laura Lorenzetti, which stated the platform's intention to detect and downrank AI-generated content to reduce its visibility to users. This suggests a proactive stance by LinkedIn to manage the influx of AI-generated material on its network, despite the current high saturation levels identified by the Pangram study.
