Joe Freshgoods Opens First Permanent Chicago Store

Chicago designer Joe Freshgoods, known for building narratives through sneakers and apparel over nearly two decades, has launched his first permanent retail store, Every Now and Then, in the city's West Town neighborhood. Following a soft opening earlier in the month, the boutique is now accessible to the public, functioning as a central hub for Freshgoods' projects and a multifaceted community space that integrates fashion, art, food, and design. Freshgoods stated on Instagram that the store is intended to reflect his current life stage, encompassing design, art, architecture, technology, food, and storytelling under one roof. This venture represents a natural progression for a designer whose career has been defined by conveying personal stories through his products. In addition to showcasing future Joe Freshgoods footwear and apparel collections, the store will feature a carefully selected range of international brands not currently available elsewhere in Chicago. Freshgoods expressed his desire to create a genuine gathering place for people, evoking the nostalgia that initially drew him to streetwear. In an interview with Block Club Chicago, he elaborated that the shop aims to support "a lot of smaller, up-and-coming designers that I really believe in," establishing Every Now and Then as a platform for emerging talent alongside its retail function. A core element of the store is Josephine's, an in-house café named in honor of Freshgoods' grandmother. Similar to his well-received collaborations with New Balance, the café draws inspiration from the designer's personal memories and childhood experiences. He described the café's concept as being inspired by "the summers I spent in Alabama, being around family, and the memories connected to food, tea, music, and slowing down for a little while." The interior of the boutique displays artwork by Jahlil Nzinga and Kayimahe Ishmael Zed, alongside various collectibles, further enhancing the store's curated and community-focused atmosphere. The store's opening signifies a significant milestone for Freshgoods, solidifying his connection to his hometown and providing a tangible space for his creative vision to flourish and engage with the local community.
