YouTube personality Hank Green has issued an apology after fans accused him of overusing artificial intelligence in his content creation process. Green, who has been a prominent figure on YouTube for nearly two decades and co-hosts educational series like SciShow and CrashCourse, acknowledged that he had been "relying too heavily on AI as a research aid." He stated on Reddit this week, "I'm mortified that I have let so many people down, and I think I understand how that happened." The controversy began when fans noticed a phrase, "I appreciate the pushback," in one of Green's recent videos. This particular phrasing is commonly used by chatbots when responding to user input, leading to speculation that Green was reading an AI-generated script. In a now-deleted post on X, Green explained that he had used ChatGPT for research on the video's script but claimed the phrase was an impromptu response during a conversation with a guest. He cited "under a ton of pressure" to produce the video as a contributing factor.

Green, who commands over 12 million followers across social media and approximately 32 million subscribers on YouTube, indicated that he plans to make significant changes to his content production workflow. He announced a pause on videos for his personal channel, hankschannel, as well as for his online daily word puzzle projects, SMUSH and 4×3. Green elaborated on his concerns regarding AI's impact on his work, stating, "It can be very useful for this task, giving me access to a lot of papers I didn’t know existed really fast, but I think that has been to the detriment of my work because it has not given me the freedom to find all of my own ways into and around a topic." This admission highlights a growing debate surrounding the role of AI as a productivity tool, with mixed reactions from both researchers and users.
