Traverse City Named America's Best Lake Town for 2026

Traverse City, Michigan, was named the Best American Lake Town for 2026 by Boatmart, an online boating marketplace. This designation acknowledges the city's superior marina quality and access to boat launches, alongside its broader community amenities and natural surroundings. Boatmart's selection process also factored in the town's proximity to significant natural attractions, such as the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, known for its towering 400-foot dunes along Lake Michigan, and Clinch Park, offering white-sand beaches.
This year, Traverse City is also celebrating its 100th annual Cherry Festival, a week-long event commencing on July 4th, which honors local cherry farmers. The festival features an air show, parades, concerts, and performances by artists including KC and the Sunshine Band, David Lee Roth, Bow Wow, and Soulja Boy. The festival underscores the city's reputation as the "Cherry Capital of the World."
Located on the southern tip of Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan, Traverse City has a population of approximately 16,000 residents, with its greater metropolitan area encompassing about 153,000 people. The Old Mission Peninsula, a 16-mile stretch within Traverse City, is characterized by numerous wineries, breweries, and beaches. The community offers year-round outdoor recreational opportunities, including sailing and kayaking during the summer and skiing in the winter. Andy LaPointe, owner of Traverse Bay Farms, noted that "Boating isn’t just a vacation activity here; it’s part of the community," and described life in Traverse City as moving at a "different pace."
