Trump Signals No Veto for Landmark Housing Bill

President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the landmark 21st Century Road to Housing Act is "fine," signaling he is unlikely to veto the legislation. While expressing a preference for the SAVE America Act, a voter identification bill, Trump softened his stance on the housing package, which contains numerous Democratic provisions he finds unfavorable. The housing bill will automatically become law by July 10 if Trump does not use his veto power, as it has been 10 days since House Speaker Mike Johnson submitted it to the Oval Office. Even a veto could be overridden by the supermajorities that supported the bill in both the House (358-32 vote) and the Senate (85-5 vote), making its eventual passage probable.

The 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a 381-page bill with 45 provisions, aims to reduce regulatory hurdles and stimulate the construction of more homes. Key measures within the act include restrictions on institutional investors in the housing market, new banking regulations designed to encourage mortgage lending, and initiatives to streamline homebuilding processes. The legislation was hailed as a bipartisan effort to lower housing costs shortly before Trump abruptly canceled a scheduled signing ceremony.

Trump had previously described the housing bill as "a yawn" compared to the SAVE America Act. However, his recent comments suggest a shift in his position, indicating that the housing bill, despite its perceived flaws from his perspective, is acceptable enough to avoid a presidential veto. The bill's automatic enactment by July 10 underscores the legislative momentum behind it, driven by broad bipartisan support.
