Phoebe Gates Aims for AI Startup Success Without Family Name

Phoebe Gates, the 23-year-old daughter of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and philanthropist Melinda French Gates, is actively working to establish her artificial intelligence shopping company, Phia, with a strong emphasis on independent success. Gates has publicly stated her ambition for Phia to thrive without any association with her family's prominent name or privilege, aiming to prove her venture's worth based on merit alone. She expressed this sentiment during an appearance on Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid Unfiltered podcast in February, revealing that she "has a chip on her shoulder" and is driven to win over Silicon Valley investors based on her own achievements rather than her inheritance.

Phia has successfully raised over $43 million in funding, and the startup is currently valued at approximately $185 million. Gates acknowledged learning from her father's business acumen, particularly the importance of a strong team, stating, "From my dad, I’ve really learned that your team is the core of what you’re building. You can’t do anything without an incredible team." This foundational principle appears to guide her approach to building Phia.

However, Phia has recently faced scrutiny. Bloomberg reported that Gates and her co-founder, Sophia Kianni, a Stanford University roommate, allegedly pushed for the implementation of features in the e-commerce startup's software that attributed sales to the company even when it did not directly drive them. This practice is known as "cookie stuffing." While the company initially claimed in July to have been aware of the situation for only 24 hours, Bloomberg's subsequent investigation, citing individuals familiar with the matter, indicated that Phia had been aware of the issue for seven months. This revelation emerged during Bloomberg's testing of the company's extension across more than 50 websites.

These developments occur against a backdrop of public attention on the Gates family. Phoebe Gates' comments were made during a period when her father's past associations with Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced. Representatives for Bill Gates have consistently denied any wrongdoing or involvement in related accusations. Melinda French Gates, Phoebe's mother, had previously commented on the Epstein files, stating that her ex-husband "has to answer" for them, shortly after it was revealed she received $8 billion as part of her divorce settlement to fund her philanthropic organization, Pivotal. Phoebe Gates herself did not directly address the Epstein allegations but focused on her entrepreneurial drive.
