VC Sam Collett Identifies Startup Moats

Venture capitalist Sam Collett of Promus Ventures has detailed his methodology for identifying startups with "defensible moats," or sustainable competitive advantages, in a recent interview. Collett emphasizes that a strong moat is crucial for long-term success and investor confidence, moving beyond initial product-market fit.

Collett highlights network effects as a primary indicator. He explains that businesses where the value increases with each new user, such as social platforms or marketplaces, create a powerful barrier to entry. For instance, a social network with millions of active users is significantly harder for a new competitor to displace than one with only a few thousand. This creates a virtuous cycle where more users attract more users, solidifying the platform's dominance.

Another critical moat Collett discusses is the "data moat." This refers to companies that accumulate unique and proprietary data sets, which then improve their products or services over time. Machine learning models, for example, become more accurate and effective as they are trained on larger and more specific datasets. This continuous improvement cycle makes it difficult for competitors to catch up, as they lack access to the same rich data. Collett suggests that startups with a clear strategy for acquiring and leveraging data have a significant advantage.

Beyond network and data effects, Collett also considers "capital moats," where significant funding is required to compete, and "brand moats," built on strong customer loyalty and reputation.
