Honda and QuantumScape (QS) team up to make solid-state batteries

Honda Motor Co. and QuantumScape Corporation announced a strategic partnership on November 16, 2023, to advance the commercialization of solid-state batteries. This collaboration aims to integrate QuantumScape's proprietary solid-state battery technology into Honda's future electric vehicles (EVs) and potentially other applications. The partnership will involve joint development efforts to accelerate the mass production of these next-generation batteries, which promise higher energy density, faster charging capabilities, and improved safety compared to current lithium-ion batteries. QuantumScape has been developing its solid-state technology since 2010, focusing on a solid electrolyte that eliminates the flammable liquid electrolyte found in conventional batteries. Honda's involvement signifies a significant step towards validating and scaling this technology for automotive use. The companies plan to establish a joint venture to oversee the manufacturing and deployment of these batteries, with initial targets for integration into Honda's EV lineup in the latter half of the 2020s. This alliance positions both companies to be leaders in the rapidly evolving EV battery market, addressing key challenges in range anxiety and charging times that have been barriers to wider EV adoption.
