Hinge Founder Launches AI Matchmaker Overtone With $18M Funding

Hinge founder Justin McLeod has launched a new AI-driven matchmaking startup named Overtone, securing $18 million USD in seed funding. The funding round was backed by Match Group, FirstMark Capital, and Pace Capital, with the aim of addressing widespread dating app burnout. McLeod, who stepped down as CEO of Hinge in late 2025, designed Overtone to foster more meaningful connections by prioritizing audio interviews and voice interactions over superficial swipe-based interfaces.

Overtone seeks to differentiate itself from existing dating platforms by eschewing algorithmic feeds and gamified layouts. Instead, the platform utilizes artificial intelligence behind the scenes to synthesize user profiles and generate highly curated introductions. This approach is intended to move away from the constant scrolling and superficial judgments that contribute to user fatigue. A recent Forbes Health survey indicated that 78 percent of dating app users experience burnout, spending close to an hour daily on the apps without finding fulfilling connections.

The startup's name, Overtone, is inspired by musical overtones, symbolizing the subtle frequencies that add richness to sound, reflecting the platform's focus on deeper, more nuanced communication. By focusing on spoken interviews, Overtone aims to capture the unique stories and personalities of its users, moving beyond static text and curated photos. The platform's design intentionally avoids hidden statistics and the pressure of managing multiple simultaneous conversations, emphasizing a more focused and personal matchmaking experience grounded in relationship science.
