Her debut novel was turned into a Prime Video series. Now, Carley Fortune is relishing in the romance renaissance

Carley Fortune's debut novel, "Every Summer After," published in 2022, has achieved over a million copies sold and was adapted into a television series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video two weeks ago. Fortune, who previously worked as an executive editor for Refinery29 Canada, transitioned to writing full-time after experiencing frustration with corporate pressures, returning to the lake where she grew up to write. This shift led to five best-selling books in five years, two projects in development at Netflix, and the success of her romance novels set in picturesque Canadian locations. Fortune's journalism background has informed her writing process, and she discussed the current resurgence of romance novel adaptations to screen in an interview with Fast Company. She attributes the enduring appeal of summer settings in her books to its fleeting nature, particularly in Canada, which imbues the season with a sense of anticipation, hope, and nostalgia. Writing about summer during the fall and winter months allows her to experience the season year-round, aligning with her preference for summer over winter.
