Harlem's Fashion Row Celebrates Icons and Emerging Talent at 19th Annual Style Awards and Fashion Show

Harlem's Fashion Row (HFR), a prominent organization dedicated to amplifying Black voices and creating opportunities within the fashion industry, hosted its 19th Annual Fashion Show and Style Awards on September 7, 2023. The prestigious event, held at the historic Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom in New York City, served as a dual celebration: honoring influential figures who have significantly shaped fashion and culture, and providing a vital platform for emerging design talent. The evening commenced with the Style Awards ceremony, recognizing individuals for their exceptional contributions. Musician and style icon Erykah Badu was presented with the ICON Award, acknowledging her enduring influence on fashion and artistry. Brandon Blackwood, the founder and designer behind the eponymous luxury handbag brand known for its bold designs and commitment to representation, received the Designer of the Year Award. This award highlights Blackwood's rapid ascent and impact on the contemporary fashion landscape. Stylist and prominent content creator Wisdom Kaye, celebrated for his innovative and trend-setting styling work across social media and editorial platforms, was honored with the Stylist of the Year Award. Additionally, Elaine Welteroth, a respected fashion journalist, author, and former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, received the Media Award, recognizing her significant role in shaping fashion discourse and championing diversity in media. These accolades underscore HFR's core mission to foster a more inclusive and equitable fashion industry by celebrating those who pave the way. Following the awards, the event transitioned into a captivating fashion show. This segment featured the latest collections from three exceptionally talented emerging designers: Jacques Agbobly, founder of his namesake brand, known for his avant-garde and culturally inspired designs; Aisha B. Coleman, creator of the Aisha B. Coleman brand, whose work often explores themes of heritage and empowerment; and Dominique Drakeford, a leading voice in sustainable fashion and founder of the consultancy Drakeford Consulting, as well as the brand House of AAMA, which champions ethical and conscious fashion practices. The selection of these designers provided them with invaluable exposure to a broad audience of fashion industry professionals, buyers, and media, marking a significant milestone in their careers. Founded by Brandice Daniel, HFR has consistently championed Black designers and creatives since its inception, and the 19th annual event reinforced this commitment, celebrating established luminaries while actively nurturing and promoting the next generation of fashion leaders.
