Elon Musk's Grokipedia AI Encyclopedia Appears Stalled

Elon Musk's AI-powered encyclopedia, Grokipedia, launched in October 2025 as an "anti-woke" alternative to Wikipedia, has seemingly stopped updating its content. Initially positioned as a counter-narrative to established information sources, Grokipedia was designed to offer a curated perspective, a move described by Renée DiResta for The Atlantic as part of "an escalating campaign to discredit Wikipedia and reshape what counts as a reliable source of basic information in the age of AI." While the platform initially allowed human suggestions for edits, a February analysis by Columbia's Tow Center for Digital Journalism revealed a significant shift, with AI-generated edits increasingly dominating the submission process. According to C.J. Robinson, a Tow Center fellow, "Grok-supplied edits spiked in December and have overtaken human submitters, making up more than three-quarters of the suggestions." However, recent observations indicate a complete halt in activity. DiResta and Ronald Robertson of the Stanford Cyber Policy Center reported for Lawfare this week that "the encyclopedia stopped editing itself and processing suggested edits from humans," noting that "as far as we can tell, no entry has changed in more than three months." This cessation of updates is significant due to Grokipedia's user base and its role as a source for other AI systems. Web traffic analytics firm Similarweb estimated that Grokipedia garnered 6.7 million visits in June 2026, ranking 11,022nd globally, demonstrating substantial reach for a site less than a year old. Specific entries have seen considerable engagement; Grokipedia's page-statistics API, which tracks per-article view counts not displayed on the website's front end, recorded over 83 million views for President Obama's entry and 16 million lifetime views for Elon Musk's entry since its launch in October 2025. The influence of Grokipedia's content extends beyond its own platform, as it is frequently cited by other AI models. An analysis by Ahrefs published in March 2026 found Grokipedia surfacing in approximately 356,000 citations across various AI systems. The most frequent citations were observed in OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode, with lower volumes appearing in Microsoft's Copilot, Google's Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews. This reliance on Grokipedia by prominent AI tools means that the stagnation of its content could lead to outdated or inaccurate information being propagated by these systems, potentially influencing public understanding of various topics.
