Greenhouse CEO Cites AI Doom Loop in Job Market

Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait has identified a significant problem in the current job market, which he terms the "AI doom loop," where both job seekers and employers are experiencing dissatisfaction due to the pervasive use of artificial intelligence in the application process. Chait explained to Fortune that this situation marks the first time in his experience that neither side of the hiring equation is content, leading to a dysfunctional market. Job seekers, frustrated by a lack of responses to their traditional applications, are turning to AI-powered tools that automate the submission of résumés to a wide array of open positions. These tools, some costing around $20, enable candidates to "shoot out job applications willy-nilly to as many jobs as they want," effectively sending applications into a "black hole" without seeing any tangible progress. This approach, however, is overwhelming recruiters on the employer side. Greenhouse's platform currently hosts 175,000 live job openings. On average, each job advertisement receives approximately 254 applications, resulting in a 412% increase in applications per recruiter. Chait noted that recruiters can receive "hundreds or thousands of applications in just a day or two," making it impossible to manage effectively. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that many of these applications are AI-generated, causing them to "all start to look the same." This homogeneity makes it difficult for employers to distinguish between genuinely interested candidates and those who have simply used automated tools to apply to numerous positions. Consequently, employers are compelled to use their own AI solutions to cope with the sheer volume of applications. In response to being overlooked, candidates resort to applying to even more jobs, perpetuating the cycle. Chait described this as a situation where "everyone's using their own AI to solve their own problem, but it's making the whole system worse." The "AI doom loop" highlights a systemic issue where technological solutions intended to streamline processes are, in fact, degrading the overall effectiveness and satisfaction for all parties involved in the hiring ecosystem. This phenomenon affects not only individual job seekers and companies but also the broader efficiency of the labor market.
