Google's 2025 Electricity Use Surged 37% Due to AI

Google reported a 37 percent increase in its annual electricity consumption for 2025, marking the largest rise in the company's history. This surge is primarily attributed to the ongoing expansion of AI data centers across Silicon Valley. Despite the significant jump in energy usage, Google stated that it maintained operational carbon emissions at net zero by continuing to procure substantial amounts of clean energy.

The company's latest sustainability report indicates that Google's total electricity consumption has grown by over 250 percent since 2019. This growth is linked to the increasing demands of Google Cloud services, YouTube video streaming, and the construction and operation of data centers that support various artificial intelligence products and services. The 37 percent annual increase in 2025 follows a 27 percent growth in electricity consumption observed in 2024, highlighting a consistent upward trend.

According to the Google sustainability report, the company acknowledges that the path to achieving its climate goals is not linear, especially as its AI infrastructure buildout is currently accelerating at a pace faster than the grid's decarbonization efforts. Nevertheless, Google remains committed to scaling abundant and affordable clean power globally. The company also emphasizes its focus on advancing technological innovations aimed at reducing emissions across its operations and contributing to broader industry-wide emission reductions.
