Google Cloud has announced Agent Compute Engine, a compute service built specifically for AI agents, providing each agent with its own hardware-isolated microVM.

Key points

  • Google Cloud launched Agent Compute Engine for AI agents.
  • Each AI agent gets a hardware-isolated microVM.
  • The service powers Gemini for work tasks.
  • Customer preview is expected in the coming months.

This new service, unveiled at AGNTCon + MCPCon, aims to offer VM-grade isolation with container-like speed and density. Customer preview is anticipated in the coming months.

The Agent Compute Engine provides each AI agent session with a dedicated microVM featuring its own guest kernel, root access, and Hyperdisk. These microVMs run on Google-managed hosts utilizing Titan silicon and the Titanium IPU. Idle agents are checkpointed to zero active resources and resumed from snapshots, optimizing resource usage.

The service powers Gemini as an agent for work tasks, as well as Antigravity and internal evaluation and RL pipelines. Google structures each agent into two parts: the harness, or 'brain,' which calls the model, and the sandbox, or 'hands,' which executes code, shell commands, and browsers. The harness operates outside the sandbox, dispatching explicit commands into it.

Each microVM session operates behind a Cloud Hypervisor boundary, with hosts being stateless appliances that enforce a read-only root filesystem via dm-verity. Titanium holds attestation keys outside the guest. Networking is unique, as microVMs lack standard network interfaces, default gateways, or direct VPC access, with all traffic crossing a virtio-vsock boundary to a local proxy before reaching an external gateway.
