France's Largest Peacetime Evacuation Ends Amid New Fires

Firefighters successfully contained a large wildfire in southwestern France on Saturday, allowing approximately 198,000 individuals to return to their homes. This event marked what is potentially France's largest peacetime evacuation. However, the situation remained dynamic, with renewed fires forcing thousands to evacuate their homes in other parts of France and Greece. In the Var region, a fire that was previously thought to be under control reignited and spread rapidly across 10 square kilometers (4 square miles) in just six hours on Friday, described by the prefecture as moving "faster than a horse at full gallop." This resurgence, alongside mass returns in the Gironde region of France and boat evacuations from a Greek resort, highlighted the volatile nature of the ongoing fire crises and how quickly containment efforts can be reversed.

At the height of the fires, approximately 330,000 people were displaced from their homes and vacation sites across France and Spain. This widespread emergency strained the resources of firefighters, aircraft, and emergency services, who were managing multiple simultaneous crises. Europe is experiencing accelerated warming, with temperatures rising at more than twice the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus climate service. This trend, coupled with prolonged drought conditions, dries out vegetation, creating an environment where wildfires can spread more rapidly and burn with greater intensity.

The wildfire in the Gironde region had, by Saturday, burned 420 square kilometers (162 square miles) of pine forest located west of Bordeaux. This area is equivalent to four times the size of Paris. Firefighting officials confirmed that the flames remained within the established perimeter on Saturday, indicating no breach beyond its existing boundaries. Nevertheless, the fire had not been officially declared "fixed," which is the designation given when crews confirm a fire is no longer advancing. Active sectors and smoldering hot spots persisted within the burned area. Several communities in the vicinity of this fire remained largely deserted. Authorities maintained the evacuation of the affluent, forested Cap Ferret peninsula due to a nearby hot spot that posed a risk of flaring up again, potentially threatening the limited road access and trapping residents and tourists. Lieutenant Colonel Eric Pitault informed reporters that "Today, the fire is still not fixed. It is contained," emphasizing the ongoing challenges in fully extinguishing the blaze.
