FBI Director Patel Discusses Cybercrime Crackdown With Cambodian PM

FBI Director Kash Patel met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Wednesday to discuss joint efforts to combat international online scam operations. These scams are estimated to cause victims billions of dollars annually, with a United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime report from Tuesday estimating losses in the Asia-Pacific region alone at as much as $114 billion in 2025. The report also noted that as authorities conduct raids on scam centers, criminals are adapting by relocating or operating on a smaller scale.

Patel's visit to Cambodia followed his trip to Thailand, where he participated in a two-day summit co-hosted by the U.S. with nearly 20 countries and hundreds of law enforcement officials. In Thailand, Patel met with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to discuss cooperation on tackling scam centers and other transnational crimes, including human trafficking and drug trafficking, through information sharing and intelligence exchanges. Cybercrime has thrived in Southeast Asia due to weaker law enforcement, particularly in Cambodia and Myanmar.

Scam centers are frequently linked to human trafficking, with thousands of foreign nationals recruited through false job offers and forced into near-slavery conditions to operate "romance" and cryptocurrency scams. Cambodia has stated it has accelerated its crackdown on these operations this year, which a U.S. Embassy statement identified as a "top priority for the U.S. government." The U.S. Embassy indicated that Washington values Hun Manet's commitment to addressing this issue and is coordinating closely with the Cambodian government. Patel's visit underscores the necessity of robust, joint efforts to combat transnational cybercrime.
