Former OpenAI Exec Fidji Simo Launches ChronicleBio to Cure POTS

Fidji Simo, a former senior leader at OpenAI, has launched a new company named ChronicleBio with the explicit goal of developing a cure for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a chronic illness she has battled for seven years. Simo, who previously held significant roles including CEO of AGI Deployment at OpenAI and oversaw the Facebook app at Meta before becoming CEO of Instacart, announced her departure from OpenAI to focus on her health and this new venture. Her decision to leave OpenAI, where she reported directly to CEO Sam Altman, was prompted by the severity of her POTS symptoms, which she describes as the "physically the worst I've ever been."

ChronicleBio's mission is to apply artificial intelligence to complex diseases like POTS, for which there is currently no known cure. The company's approach involves collecting and analyzing vast amounts of biological data. Simo revealed that ChronicleBio has already collected "3,500 vials of blood" as part of its research efforts. This extensive data collection is intended to fuel AI models capable of identifying novel therapeutic targets and treatment strategies. Simo co-founded ChronicleBio with Rohit Gupta and Rishi Reddy, who, like Simo, have personal or familial experience with chronic diseases, underscoring the deeply personal motivation behind the startup.

Simo's departure from OpenAI was met with personal understanding from her colleagues. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's co-founder and president, who assumed many of Simo's responsibilities, has a personal connection to POTS as his wife, Anna, also suffers from the condition, along with two other chronic diseases. Simo remains connected to OpenAI's leadership team, participating in Slack channels and regularly communicating with Sam Altman, indicating a continued advisory role or close relationship with her former employer. Her transition highlights a growing trend of tech leaders applying advanced AI capabilities to address significant unmet medical needs, moving beyond theoretical applications to tangible therapeutic development.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a condition affecting the autonomic nervous system, leading to an abnormal increase in heart rate upon standing and causing symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and fainting. The lack of a cure and the often debilitating nature of POTS make Simo's endeavor particularly significant for patients worldwide. ChronicleBio's strategy of integrating AI with extensive biological datasets, including the substantial blood sample collection, represents a data-intensive and computationally driven approach to drug discovery and development. This initiative aims to provide hope for individuals like Simo's cousin, who also suffers from POTS, by accelerating the scientific process towards a potential cure.
