EU Leaders Convene Urgent Meeting Over Airport Chaos

European Union leaders have called an urgent meeting with airlines to address widespread airport chaos that is significantly impacting passenger travel. The disruption stems from the recent rollout of the EU's new Entry and Exit System (EES), which began in April and mandates biometric checks for all individuals entering or leaving Schengen Area countries. This system aims to enhance border security by more closely monitoring passenger movements.

However, the implementation of the EES has led to substantial delays and hours-long queues at numerous European airports. Travelers have reported experiencing significant backups, with some narrowly making their flights. For instance, one traveler arriving at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) nearly three hours before their American Airlines flight to Philadelphia found themselves in a border control line so long they almost missed boarding.

The aviation industry is urging for immediate action. In a public letter released on Wednesday, a consortium of European airports requested "immediate intervention" from EU leaders, citing wait times of up to five hours at some major hubs. They also highlighted instances of flight delays and passengers missing connections, all occurring before the peak summer travel season.

Ryanair, a prominent low-cost carrier, issued its own memo on Thursday, calling for the suspension of the EES program until September. The airline argued that the new border system is demonstrably unprepared to handle the anticipated volume of summer travelers. The ongoing issues raise concerns about the system's readiness and its impact on the upcoming peak travel period.
