Elon Musk Lives in Airstream Trailer for xAI Expansion

Elon Musk, identified as the world's richest man with a net worth of $917 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, has taken up residence in an Airstream trailer in Memphis, Tennessee. This unusual living arrangement is directly linked to his oversight of xAI's "Colossus" project, described as the company's most ambitious undertaking to date. Musk revealed his "palace" during a taping of the All-In podcast, appearing alongside Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX. Shotwell commented on Musk's living situation, characterizing it as typical of his deep commitment to projects he prioritizes, noting his history of "sleeping on the factory floor" and actively participating in building operations. Musk's presence in Memphis is driven by xAI's rapid expansion of Colossus, a supercomputer center designed to provide substantial computing power. This capacity has already led to lucrative deals, with xAI striking agreements to supply excess computing power to major tech companies like Google and Anthropic for billions of dollars. The construction of Colossus commenced in 2024, with the initial phase reportedly completed in just 122 days. This facility is intended to fuel the operations of Grok, xAI's proprietary large language model. While the concept of data centers in space remains a distant prospect, Memphis has become a central hub for xAI's terrestrial infrastructure development. In late July, xAI announced plans for a fourth data center, named "Minihard," which will augment its existing facilities. Although Musk did not specify the exact model of the Airstream trailer he is using, these campers typically feature amenities such as a sleeping area, kitchen, and bathroom within a compact 16-foot space. This behavior echoes Musk's past practices of staying close to critical projects. For instance, during the early days of his first startup, Zip2, in the 1990s, Musk and his brother Kimbal reportedly lived in a small Palo Alto office for six months, utilizing YMCA facilities for showering, as detailed in Walter Isaacson's biography. This pattern highlights Musk's tendency to immerse himself directly in the operational details of his ventures when they demand significant attention or are undergoing critical development phases.
