El Niño Is Here and Will Have ‘Big Consequences’ for Global Weather

El Niño officially began in June 2023, with scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirming its presence. This climate pattern is characterized by a significant warming of the surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. According to climate scientist Kevin Trenberth, who was interviewed by Jenni Doering for Living on Earth, the current El Niño is expected to have substantial impacts on global weather patterns throughout the upcoming winter. Trenberth indicated that the development of El Niño could lead to increased rainfall in regions like Southern California and the southern United States, potentially mitigating drought conditions. However, he also cautioned that the warmer and drier conditions associated with El Niño in other parts of the world, particularly in Australia and Southeast Asia, could elevate the risk of wildfires. The intensity of this El Niño event is still being assessed, but its arrival marks a significant shift in the global climate system, with far-reaching consequences for agriculture, water resources, and extreme weather events.
