DJI Sues Insta360 in Patent Showdown

DJI initiated a patent infringement lawsuit against Insta360 on June 10, 2024, in the Eastern District of Texas, alleging that the newly released Insta360 Luna Ultra camera infringes on its design and utility patents. DJI claims the Luna Ultra's physical design, including its rotatable display and neck-to-gimbal connection, along with its subject-tracking software and motor control, are direct copies of its Osmo Pocket series. The drone manufacturer is seeking financial damages, royalty payments, and a permanent injunction to halt sales of the rival product, describing the Luna Ultra as a "blatant replica" of the Osmo Pocket 3. In response, Insta360 filed two counter-suits on June 12, 2024, asserting that DJI's stabilization and telemetry patents are infringing on its own intellectual property. These claims cover five utility patents related to gimbal stabilization, directional control, and telemetry overlay, which Insta360 states are utilized in DJI's Ronin, Osmo Mobile, and Osmo 360 camera lines. Insta360 founder JK Liu stated that the Luna Ultra's development began independently in 2020 and characterized DJI's legal actions as an attempt to suppress competition.
