Data Centers Boost Midwest Economy Amid Consumer Spending Slowdown

Large-scale data center construction projects are providing a significant economic uplift to regions in the Midwest and South, even as consumer spending faces headwinds from rising prices, according to a new report from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The report, part of the Federal Reserve's Beige Book, gathers anecdotal economic data from various districts. In the St. Louis Fed's Eighth District, which includes Arkansas and parts of six other states, prices have risen at a robust and widespread pace. However, this has not translated into strong employment growth or significant wage increases, with elevated fuel costs also contributing to uncertainty and weighing on overall economic conditions.

Business contacts within the district are observing an increase in price-sensitive customers. One large retailer noted that while customers are visiting stores more frequently, their overall spending is decreasing, with purchases limited to essential items. This trend is also reflected in household budgets, where rising electricity costs are being passed on by utility companies to cover infrastructure upgrades needed to meet escalating demand. The report highlights that the expanding network of data centers is the primary positive economic driver in an otherwise challenging environment.

Data center construction is a key contributor to this economic growth, creating demand for materials such as structural steel and copper. The St. Louis area alone hosts over 40 operational data centers, with an additional dozen planned. This construction boom is directly fueling local economies by creating jobs and stimulating demand for construction-related goods and services.
