Cricket Scotland Regrets Hurt After Racism Whistleblower Drops Claim

Cricket Scotland has expressed regret for the "hurt" experienced by former cricketer Majid Haq, who has dropped a victimisation claim against the organization. Haq, who previously served as a whistleblower regarding racism within Scottish cricket, filed the claim after his dismissal from his role as a performance analyst.

The decision to drop the claim was announced on March 14, 2024, following mediation between Haq and Cricket Scotland. While the specific terms of the resolution were not disclosed, Cricket Scotland stated that it "regrets the hurt" Haq has endured and acknowledged the "significant personal impact" of his experiences. The organization also committed to implementing recommendations from a report by the sport's independent ethics committee, which investigated the allegations of racism.

Haq's allegations, which surfaced in 2022, detailed systemic racism within Cricket Scotland. He claimed that the organization had failed to adequately address discriminatory practices and had retaliated against him for speaking out. His whistleblowing contributed to a broader reckoning within Scottish sport regarding diversity and inclusion.

Following Haq's allegations, Cricket Scotland commissioned an independent review led by Louise Reilly KC. The review, published in December 2023, found evidence of institutional racism and made 47 recommendations for reform. Cricket Scotland has stated its commitment to implementing these changes to foster a more inclusive environment.
