Covid vaccination cut risk of adverse heart events, large study finds

COVID-19 vaccination reduced the risk of adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday. The research followed over 1 million veterans who received flu vaccinations at Veterans Affairs health care facilities in 2024, with approximately one-third of this cohort also receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. The findings indicate that COVID-19 vaccination was associated with a lower incidence of hospitalization and death related to cardiovascular issues. This broad cardioprotective effect suggests a beneficial impact of vaccination beyond its primary role in preventing severe COVID-19 illness. The study's large sample size and focus on a real-world veteran population provide robust evidence for these observed cardiovascular benefits.
