CATL's 30-Year Sodium-Ion Batteries Deployed in Europe

CATL has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Dutch energy company Alfen to deploy 5 GWh of its Tener Sodium energy storage systems across Europe. This agreement represents one of the largest commitments to sodium-ion battery technology in the region to date.

The Tener Sodium batteries are engineered for exceptional longevity, boasting a rating of 15,000 cycles and an estimated service life of 25 to 30 years. CATL is positioning these batteries for grid storage applications, emphasizing their durability and extended operational lifespan as key advantages over other battery chemistries. This focus on longevity aims to address the long-term needs of grid infrastructure.

While sodium-ion batteries typically have lower energy density compared to lithium-ion alternatives, their cost-effectiveness and extended lifespan make them a compelling option for stationary energy storage. The 5 GWh deployment by CATL and Alfen is expected to significantly contribute to grid stability and renewable energy integration in Europe, showcasing the growing viability of sodium-ion technology for large-scale energy solutions.
