UK Councils Gain Power to Block Vape and Betting Shops

Local authorities in England and Wales are set to receive expanded powers to prevent betting and vape shops from dominating their high streets, as announced by Andy Burnham. This initiative aims to give councils greater control over the types of businesses that establish themselves in commercial areas, addressing concerns about the impact on community character and local economies. Under the proposed changes, new betting shops and adult gaming centres will require explicit approval from local councils, allowing authorities to reject applications based on local planning needs and community impact assessments. Furthermore, vape shops will be subjected to planning permission requirements.
