Supergirl Box Office Debut Disappoints With $38 Million

The DC Studios film "Supergirl" debuted to a disappointing $38 million from 3,600 North American theaters, and $68 million globally. This figure fell short of the $50 million domestic opening that Warner Bros. and DC Studios had been targeting for the space adventure film.
In contrast, "Toy Story 5" maintained its top position at the box office, earning an additional $70 million domestically in its second weekend. The animated sequel has now grossed a total of $185 million in North America and $310 million worldwide since its release.
"Supergirl" faced stiff competition from established franchises and a general audience fatigue for superhero films. Industry analysts cited a crowded release schedule and mixed pre-release buzz as contributing factors to the film's underperformance. The film's budget is reported to be over $200 million, making its current box office performance a significant concern for its profitability.
Other films in the top five included "The Jungle Book 3," which added $25 million domestically, bringing its total to $110 million. "Mission: Impossible 8" secured fourth place with $18 million, and "Avatar 4" rounded out the top five with $15 million, pushing its domestic total to $450 million.
