Merlin App to Feed Birdsong Data to Global Biodiversity Project

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology plans to integrate its Merlin bird identification app with the eBird platform, a major citizen-science biodiversity project. This update will enable real-time bird identifications made by app users to be automatically fed into eBird's global database, which already contains over 2 billion bird observation records. The initiative aims to significantly enhance the monitoring of bird populations and support conservation efforts for at-risk species.

Launched in 2021, the free Merlin app utilizes machine learning to provide rapid identification of birds through their songs and images. The forthcoming integration will allow these user-generated detections to be collected on eBird, a platform that serves as a critical resource for ornithological research and conservation planning.
