SpaceX Leases AI Compute Power to Anthropic and Google

SpaceX is actively developing an artificial intelligence compute business, renting out unused capacity from its Colossus data center complex to generate substantial revenue. This strategic move aims to justify the company's high valuation by diversifying beyond its core rocket and satellite operations. In May, SpaceX finalized an agreement with Anthropic, granting them access to approximately 325,000 Nvidia GPUs within its Colossus data centers for a monthly fee of $1.25 billion. Shortly thereafter, a similar contract was established with Google, providing them with around 110,000 GPUs for $920 million per month. These two agreements alone are projected to generate approximately $26 billion annually for SpaceX, surpassing its total revenue from the previous year. This AI compute leasing initiative provides SpaceX with immediate income from existing infrastructure, positioning the company as more than just a rocket manufacturer, as suggested by Sean Cray, a senior analyst at Moody's. The demand for AI computing power continues to exceed supply due to the escalating AI race and the development of more sophisticated AI models. Building large-scale data centers typically involves years of development and significant capital investment, making SpaceX's readily available compute power a highly attractive offering. This allows SpaceX to command premium pricing for customers requiring immediate access to computing resources, as noted by Cray in a Fortune interview. While SpaceX's primary revenue streams remain Starlink and its launch services, which generated $18.7 billion last year ($11.4 billion from connectivity and $4.1 billion from launches), its AI segment contributed $3.2 billion. However, this segment also incurred an operating loss of approximately $6.4 billion.
