Armando Cabral Reimagines USM Haller With Portuguese Textiles

Swiss modular furniture pioneer USM and designer Armando Cabral have launched their second collection, titled "NKYINKYIM A CASA," which features an eight-piece modular furniture range. This collection builds upon their initial collaboration from 2025 and is named after a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol representing transformation and growth. The project aims to explore how design can transmit cultural memory across different regions and generations, reflecting Cabral's personal journey through Guinea-Bissau, Portugal, London, and New York.

The "NKYINKYIM A CASA" collection introduces a tactile and warm aesthetic to USM's Haller modular system by incorporating historical Portuguese textile traditions. Cabral partnered with the traditional Portuguese mill Fabricaal to achieve this fusion of industrial design and heritage craftsmanship. Fabricaal has supplied vibrant woolen textiles for key seating pieces, drawing inspiration from the rich color palettes and centuries-old weaving techniques characteristic of Portugal's Alentejo region. This collaboration bridges Swiss engineering with artisanal textile production.

The collection offers a variety of functional living solutions, including notable seating designs such as the Bassarel love chair, designed for intimate seating, and the Lily daybed, intended as a prominent living room feature. Complementing these are the Manjak and Manjak Mini chairs. The range also includes storage and display units like the Banu credenza, Arkad sidetable, Uno bookcase, and a sculptural piece named Nk.
