Anthropic’s new AI model is powerful, dazzling—and about to get really expensive

Anthropic released its new AI model, Fable, on June 10, 2026, offering advanced capabilities to subscribers of its Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Fable is a publicly safe version of the more powerful Mythos model, which Anthropic deemed too dangerous for release two months prior. The company has implemented strict guardrails on Fable to prevent its use in high-risk applications. Early testers describe Fable as a significant advancement in AI, capable of easily managing complex tasks. However, this accessible subscription period is temporary, ending on June 22, 2026. After this date, Fable will only be available through API access, with users charged on a per-token basis. Anthropic cites capacity constraints as the reason for limiting subscription access, with head of growth Amol Avasare stating on X that the company is working to increase capacity and potentially reintegrate Fable into subscription limits. While Fable 5 will still be accessible via Extra Usage after the subscription period, it will not be included in standard subscription limits. This shift suggests a potential future direction for consumer AI pricing, moving away from flat subscription fees towards usage-based models, a trend observed since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022.
