US Government Launches america.gov Chatbot

The United States federal government launched america.gov on Tuesday, a new chatbot interface designed to provide citizens with direct access to government information and services. President Donald Trump unveiled the site, which functions similarly to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, featuring a prompt box where users can ask questions about federal services. The underlying large language model (LLM) powering america.gov draws its responses exclusively from official government sources, aiming to streamline the process of finding information and completing tasks.

During the unveiling, Trump stated that america.gov signifies a shift where the federal government "no longer stands in your way, and it stands only at your service." He emphasized the goal of simplifying and improving the user experience for interacting with government agencies. An executive order signed by Trump on Tuesday officially established the site. However, the executive order specifies that the chatbot will exclude tax filing services managed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), as well as information and services provided by the intelligence community and the Department of Defense.

The america.gov website greets users with a message, "Hello, America" and "Whatever you need from government, start here." It offers suggested prompts such as "How do I register my new business?," "How do I replace my Social Security card?," and "How do I book a campsite in a national park?" The core concept is to enable citizens to ask the chatbot directly for answers, bypassing the need to navigate complex digital government portals. According to the site's projections, by next year, users will be able to utilize america.gov for tasks including enrolling in Medicare, applying for a passport, and searching for federal government job openings.

The design of america.gov was overseen by the National Design Studio, a government design office composed of former U.S. Digital Service (USDS) staff and led by Joe Gebbia, co-founder and Chief Design Officer of Airbnb. This studio has previously developed other government-facing websites, such as Realfood.gov and TrumpRX.gov. Similar to these prior projects, america.gov features a polished, consumer-oriented aesthetic, with information presented through graphics within square containers that have rounded corners, evoking the design language often associated with Apple products. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the launch. Trump described the chatbot as "one front door for every single question," promising that "Everything will be answered easily and quickly."
