Alibaba Unveils China's Most Powerful AI Chip

Alibaba announced new artificial intelligence chip technologies and plans for more powerful models on Tuesday, including what it stated is China’s most powerful AI chip, the Zhenwu V900. This unveiling precedes a meeting between Chinese and U.S. leaders where competition in AI technology is anticipated to be a significant discussion point. The announcement from Alibaba arrives amidst warnings from U.S. AI leaders, such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who have expressed concerns about China's AI advancements posing a threat to the United States and have advocated for a general deceleration in AI development. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is scheduled for a state visit to Washington on Wednesday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, with AI, trade, and tariffs expected topics of discussion.

At its annual flagship conference held in Hangzhou, Alibaba introduced its new Zhenwu V900 AI chip and outlined its strategy for the subsequent generation of its AI models. CEO Eddie Wu asserted that the Zhenwu V900 chip represents the "most powerful AI chip in China today," capable of delivering three times the performance of the company’s preceding Zhenwu M890 chip. These types of chips are crucial for training advanced AI models and for "inference," which refers to the computational processes a trained AI employs to generate responses for users. Alibaba utilizes its Zhenwu chips within its data centers to provide computing resources to both the company and its cloud service clientele.

Beyond hardware, Alibaba also revealed intentions to train a new AI model with a scale of five to 10 trillion parameters. This metric quantifies an AI's learning capacity and would position Alibaba closer to the capabilities of the most advanced models developed in the U.S. For context, Alibaba's current most advanced Qwen AI model, Qwen3.8-Max, possesses 2.4 trillion parameters. In the broader Chinese AI landscape, the company Moonshot released its Kimi K3 model in July, which it claims is the world's largest open model with 2.8 trillion parameters.

Furthermore, Alibaba emphasized its plans to expand the data centers that underpin its cloud computing operations, citing an "exponentially" increasing demand for AI-specific computing power. The company projects that its computing capacity will exceed 20 gigawatts by 2030. This strategic expansion underscores Alibaba's commitment to meeting the escalating computational needs driven by the rapid advancements and widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies.
