Alibaba AI Models Surpass 3 Billion Downloads Globally

Alibaba Group Holding's open-weight AI models, collectively known as Qwen, have surpassed 3 billion global downloads within the past six months, establishing themselves as the world's leading artificial intelligence models in the open-source domain. This significant milestone positions Qwen ahead of major technology companies including Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc., as well as other domestic Chinese competitors. Alibaba has open-sourced over 460 Qwen models, fostering an ecosystem that has generated more than 300,000 derivative models, according to a statement from the Chinese technology giant. In comparison, Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, recorded 418 million downloads, and Meta had 227 million downloads in 2026, as reported by Hugging Face Inc., a prominent open-source AI hub. Hugging Face published these figures in its state of open models report on August 14. Open models offer developers the flexibility to download, customize, and utilize them as foundational components for developing new AI products, making download and derivative figures a key indicator of developer adoption and technological influence. This metric is particularly relevant in the context of the ongoing US-China AI competition, where Chinese developers like Alibaba are actively releasing capable and accessible AI models. The substantial download numbers for Qwen suggest that this strategy is resonating with developers not only within China but also internationally. The Qwen family of models, alongside contributions from other Chinese AI developers such as Moonshot AI Inc., DeepSeek, and MiniMax, are demonstrating performance levels that aim to close the gap with proprietary, closed-source models developed by leading US companies like OpenAI Inc. and Anthropic PBC. Despite existing export controls on advanced chips and AI systems, which have previously impacted access to certain models, these restrictions do not appear to be hindering the progress of Chinese AI competitors. The Hugging Face report highlights Alibaba's Qwen as a foundational element within the broader open AI ecosystem, underscoring its significant impact. The Hangzhou-based company, which operates in cloud computing, e-commerce, and AI technology, is gaining ground against both local rivals and established US-based models.
