A third of world’s energy needs should come from electricity by 2035, says Cop31 host

Turkey, the host of the upcoming UN climate summit (COP31), has stated that the world should aim to meet one-third of its energy needs from electricity by 2035. This goal is intended to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, while renewable sources contribute about one-third of global electricity generation, other major energy-consuming sectors such as transportation, heating, and industries have not kept pace with electrification. Consequently, nearly 80% of final energy consumption still relies on fossil fuels. Turkish Minister Murat Kurum highlighted that electrifying daily life will be a primary focus for this year's UN climate summit, signaling a strategic shift towards greater reliance on electricity across various applications to combat climate change.
