Cards Against Humanity Builds Anti-Musk Monument in SpaceX's Starbase

In a move that pits the creators of the popular party game Cards Against Humanity against tech mogul Elon Musk, a monument is being constructed in Starbase, Texas, a municipality largely comprised of SpaceX employees. This initiative is explicitly designed to "annoy" Musk, according to the game's creators. Starbase, situated on the southern tip of Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border, serves as a critical SpaceX rocket development and launch facility. It has recently incorporated as a municipality, with approximately 500 residents, the majority of whom are employed by SpaceX. Notably, the current mayor of Starbase is SpaceX's vice president of Texas test and launch, highlighting the company's significant influence over the town.

Cards Against Humanity's involvement in Starbase predates this monument project. In 2017, the company utilized a crowdfunding strategy to purchase approximately one acre of land within the town. This acquisition was initially intended to thwart the construction of a border wall. Now, the same crowdfunding approach is being employed to fund the creation of an "anti-Musk monument." The design committee for this project is officially named the “Official Elon Musk is a Sad Little Bitch with No Friends Monument Design Committee.” To participate in this committee and contribute to the design process, individuals are required to pay a $10 fee.

A representative for Cards Against Humanity informed Fast Company that while formal calls for design submissions have not yet been issued, a considerable number of ideas have already been sent in by enthusiastic individuals. Early concepts reportedly include a billboard that would display Elon Musk's controversial email exchanges with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Another suggestion involves creating phallic-themed designs, a nod to Starbase's prominent role as a rocket launch site. The company has expressed openness to collaborating with artists or individuals who possess a deep understanding of the local area or have a body of work specifically crafted to provoke or challenge Musk.

The Cards Against Humanity representative emphasized a commitment to a thorough and thoughtful design process. The goal is to "take the proper amount of time and care to make sure we do this right," ensuring the creation of a monument that the committee can be proud of. Furthermore, they expressed a hope that the monument might "spark a moment of introspection for Elon."
