Whitney Museum to Host Major Roy Lichtenstein Exhibition

The Whitney Museum of American Art will unveil a major exhibition titled "Roy Lichtenstein: Like New" on October 11, 2024. This comprehensive survey will showcase over 130 works by the influential Pop Art pioneer, encompassing paintings, sculptures, drawings, films, and installations. The exhibition aims to re-examine Lichtenstein's oeuvre through a contemporary lens, highlighting his foundational role in shaping today's visual culture characterized by the manipulation and reproduction of images.

Curated by Meg Onli and artist Alex Da Corte, with contributions from Nakai Falcón and David Crane, "Like New" traces Lichtenstein's artistic journey from his early explorations of perception and consumerism to his most iconic pieces. Notable works to be featured include "Look Mickey" (1961), "Drowning Girl" (1963), and "Masterpiece" (1962). A significant highlight will be the recreation of his full eight-piece Pop collection, offering a glimpse into his landmark 1962 debut at the Leo Castelli Gallery.

The exhibition will also feature the recreation of three murals, including the expansive 96-foot "Greene Street Mural" (1983), and an outdoor installation of "Girl in Window" (1964), brought to life by co-curator Alex Da Corte. Beyond his direct contributions, "Like New" will explore Lichtenstein's broader influence by juxtaposing his work with that of contemporaries such as Louise Lawler, Richard Pettibone, and Sturtevant. This comparative approach will further the exhibition's investigation into appropriation and the enduring legacy of images in art.
