2027 Lexus NX Gets Hybrid-Only Powertrain and Styling Updates

Lexus has introduced a significant mid-cycle refresh for its 2027 NX compact luxury SUV, with the most notable change being the exclusive adoption of hybrid powertrains across its entire lineup. This marks a strategic shift for the model, which was previously available with both gasoline and hybrid options. The updated NX aims to enhance its appeal with revised exterior styling, a cleaner interior design, and improved technology features.

The exterior design of the 2027 Lexus NX now features a bolder front fascia, characterized by a redesigned grille and updated headlight elements, contributing to a more assertive road presence. While specific dimensions remain largely consistent, these styling tweaks aim to align the NX with Lexus's latest design language. The rear of the vehicle also receives subtle updates, including revised taillight graphics. Inside, the cabin has been streamlined with a focus on a more minimalist aesthetic and enhanced material quality. A key interior update includes the integration of a larger, more responsive infotainment touchscreen, which is expected to offer improved user interface and connectivity options.

Under the hood, the 2027 NX will exclusively utilize hybrid powertrains. This includes the NX 350h, which pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors to deliver a combined output of 240 horsepower, and the more potent NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid. The NX 450h+ combines a 2.5-liter engine with a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery pack, offering an estimated electric-only range of approximately 37 miles. This plug-in hybrid variant is expected to provide a balance of performance and efficiency, allowing for all-electric driving for daily commutes. Both powertrains are paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) and Lexus's all-wheel-drive system as standard on the NX 450h+ and available on the NX 350h.

In addition to the powertrain and styling revisions, the 2027 Lexus NX benefits from updated safety and driver-assistance technologies. Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard, incorporating features such as pre-collision with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist. Higher trims may also receive additional enhancements, such as a digital rearview mirror and a panoramic view monitor. The refreshed NX is positioned to compete in the highly contested compact luxury SUV segment against rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC, with its all-hybrid strategy signaling a commitment to electrification within Lexus's broader product portfolio.
